Cupping

at Origin Rehabilitation Physical Therapy Clinic in Mint Hill, NC

What is Cupping Therapy?

At Origin Rehabilitation physical therapy in Mint Hill, NC, we approach each of our treatment methods and modalities from a Western Medicine basis of understanding. In reviewing current published research, cupping is understood to encourage blood flow to specifically targeted tissues.

Effects are achieved by applying a vacuum suction pressure through a pump attached to a cup placed on your skin. In response to this pressure, your tissues (i.e. skin) move into the cup and blood vessels expand.  The therapist may manipulate the cup to create a localized stretch or otherwise mobilize underlying tissues.

Cupping therapy is rarely uncomfortable and even less frequently painful. However, it may cause localized bruising of the skin below the cup due to the effect on blood vessels. These bruises normally subside within a week.

How Will Cupping Therapy Help Me?

By stimulating blood flow this way, pain can be controlled and a positive influence on the inflammatory process can be achieved. Some research suggests that local stretching or distraction of the tissues immediately underneath the cup can be stretched as well.

In our clinical application, the Eastern Medicine effects of cupping (i.e. energy flow and relaxation effects) are not considered as our therapists are not trained in Eastern Medicine diagnosis and treatment.

We find that cupping is often an effective form of pain control for our patients with chronic pain and fibromyalgia.
