Origin Rehab Physical Therapy, Health, And Wellness
Neuromuscular Re-Education is a broad term used to describe treatment techniques used to restore the normal movement patterns of your body. Think: balance, coordination, and control of movement. Your brain sends signals through nerves to your muscles to produce specific movement. Included in these signals is information about where to move, how fast, and how much strength is required. Over time, these patterns are learned and don’t require much effort at all from you (like riding a bike!). This part of treatment can take many different shapes. Often, it feels like traditional exercise. However, your physical therapist may change pace or timing of the exercise to stimulate your nerves’ responses.
Injuries and neurological diseases can disrupt these movement patterns. The result of this kind of disruption can range from compensation (like a limp while you walk) to poor balance and falling. Neuromuscular re-education is used by the therapists in our Mint Hill physical therapy clinic to teach your nerves and muscles to communicate and coordinate better. The result you’ll notice is greater ease of movement, improved confidence in your movement, and better balance or coordination during the activities you enjoy. Neuromuscular re-education is not painful. At worst, you may feel strangely weak or like you’re off balance. Don’t worry, your physical therapist is right there to prevent any falling. It’s part of the reason we feel 1-on-1 therapy is most effective.
Each of our clients has their own unique needs and our physical therapy & wellness programs are designed to meet those individual needs providing the skilled therapy and training that work best for you. You won’t find a one-size-fits-all program or experience a cookie cutter approach. Likewise, we take the time to understand exactly what you need. If you feel Neuromuscular Re-Education may benefit you, we would love the opportunity to assess and provide you with our honest feedback and recommendation for treatment. Since there are few contraindications or precautions, a trial of this treatment is usually possible.
